Governor of Michigan. Albert E. Sleeper was the 29th Governor of the State of Michigan, serving from 1917 to 1920 as a member of the Republican Party. Born a New Englander, his family migrated to Michigan when he was a boy. He attended a private school, Bradford Academy. Before entering politics, he had positions in real estate for 20 years, president of several banks, and was successful in mercantile industries. In 1901 he married Mary Charlotte Moore. The same year, he was elected to the State House of Representatives for a year. He was a member of the Republican State Committee from 1905 to 1907, and served as the state treasurer of Michigan from 1909 to 1913. He was elected governor by a popular vote on November 7, 1916 and during World War I, he was reelected to a second term in 1918. During his years in office, he established the department of labor; a public utilities commission was formed; a county road system was advanced; and a state police department was founded. He dealt with the epidemic of the Spanish influenza. To keep iron ore readily available during the war, he had to send the state police to stop any aggression by iron ore miners. After leaving office in 1921, he remained politically until his death. He was a 1928 presidential elector for Michigan. He had no children.

This is the original headstone for Governor Sleeper. It is greatly weathered. A new headstone has been erected by the State of Michigan. It is also at this site
