United States Senator. He was an American politician, businessman, and military officer who played a formative role in Nebraska state governance and established a legacy of public service that extended across multiple generations of his family. Elected to the Nebraska State Senate in 1912, marking the beginning of the Baldrige family's involvement in American politics. His tenure in state government laid the groundwork for future political contributions by his descendants. Baldrige served as Captain in Battery F, 338th Field Artillery during World War I. Baldrige's influence extended well beyond his own career through the distinguished accomplishments of his children and grandchildren: His son,Howard Malcolm Baldrige, served as a Republican U.S. Representative for Nebraska's 2nd congressional district from 1931 to 1933. His grandson,Howard Malcolm Baldrige Jr., became a prominent national figure as U.S. Secretary of Commerce from 1981 to 1987, helping to shape economic policy during the Reagan administration. Additionally, his granddaughter,Letitia Baldrige, as White House Social Secretary to First LadyJacqueline Kennedy, where she added in refining the administration's public image through her etiquette and public relations.
