Camden, Nov 7 - Mr. W.A. Ancrum died very suddenly at his hoe on Fair Street this morning, shortly after 7 o'clock. The deceased was in his 63d year and had led an active life. He entered the Confederate service when a lad of 16, volunteering with a company from the SC college, of which institution he was a student. He was first with Gregg's regiment and afterwards served in Hampton's cavalry under Gen. Butter. He was in all of the Virginia campaigns and saw hard serve until the close of the War.
He is survived by his wife who was Miss Anna Calhoun of Abbeville, a niece of John C Calhoun. One brother and five sisters also survived him, and seven children, as follows: Mrs. John D Miller of St. Paul, Minn; Mrs Edward Eve of Aiken, Lieut Wm. A Ancrum of the US Nay, Lieut, J.C. Ancrum of the US Marines and Messrs. Andrew, Thomas and Norward of Charleston and Columbia.

CSA South Carolina College Cadets, Boykin Rangers, Company A 2nd SC Cavalry. He was the son of Thomas James Ancrum and Margaret Douglas (daughter of James Kennedy Douglas and Mary Martin.) As was tradition, he was named after his uncle, William Alexander Ancrum I, who married his father's sister, Charlotte Douglas. He served as a scout during the Civil War. He owned Redbank Plantation and inherited the ancestral home built by William Ancrum II in the 18th century on Fair Street where he raised his children.
