Prospecting on Leases Near Porto Rico and Duenweg.
A company of Carthage men, composing theMutual Mining and Prospecting Co., made a good strike in its second drill hole on twenty acre lease which it holds on the Tell land at the four corners near Porto Rico. A fifteen foot face of jack and lead was struck at 175 feet.

Other drill holes are to be put down. This company also has an 18 acre lease near Duenweg which it has begun to prospect. The company is composed ofJames E. Bell,E.S. Williams,J.P. Leggett,C.B. Platt,M.J. McClurg,Robt. Stickney,E.B. Jacobs, A.L. Olive, C.J. Smith, W.S. Burch,H.A. Wolcott and a Montana gentleman who is a friend of one of the resident members of the company. (Mornin' Mail)

END COMES SUDDENLY TO PROMINENT CARTHAGE MAN

Had Lived in Carthage Almost Fifty Years and Had Many Affiliations

H. A. Wolcott, for nearly half a century a resident of Carthage, widely known in business and mining circles of the district, died suddenly at 9:15 o'clock last night of a heart attack at the Wolcott home, 1036 South Clinton street. He was 68 years old.
Mr. Wolcott first was stricken Wednesday nigh, November 26 while at the Elks Club. He was able to reach his home unassisted but during the night his condition became grave, at that time he suffered from acute indigestion and heart trouble. However, he rallied and apparently was recovering, although he remained in his bed. Last night another and fatal attack came and he passed away before medical aid could reach him.

Son's Illness a Shock
Worry over the critical illness of his son, Herbert B. Wolcott, of El Paso, Texas contributed to Mr. Wolcott's illness, it is felt. Several weeks ago Mr. and Mrs. Wolcott were summoned to their son's bedside, the telegram stating there was virtually no chance for the younger man's recovery. They made the long journey to El Paso, fearing that every minute a telegram containing news of their son's passing would be sent aboard their train. Upon reaching El Paso days elapsed before the condition of Herbert was such that they were permitted to see him. His condition was due to a burst appendix and emergency surgical operation. However, he rallied and is now making good recovery and will be able to come to Carthage for his father's funeral. A message received today from the son said he would go from El Paso to Ft. Worth by airplane today, leaving there this afternoon by train for Parsons, Kansas. He is scheduled to reach Parsons in the morning and will be met there by Judge and Mrs. Howard Gray, of Carthage, who will bring him on to Carthage.
Herbert A. Wolcott was born in Bellevue, Ohio May 27, 1862. From there he went to Flint, Michigan where he was educated in the public schools. He came to Carthage about 50 years ago and at once launched into a business career here. He was engaged in a number of enterprises here. At one time he operated a hardware store. He also conducted the hotel at Main and Central, now known as the Arlington, for a comparatively brief period. At that time it was known as the Karr House.

Prominent Mine Operator
A number of years ago he turned to mining and was the organizer of the Pittsburg-Joplin Mining Company which had valuable mining land near Chitwood, northwest of Joplin. Mr. Wolcott was in charge of the operations there for many years and also had other mining properties. In addition he had business and property interests in Carthage. He was the owner of a business block on the east side of the square at the time of his death. From the outset, Mr. Wolcott was active in the civic and social life of Carthage. In the early days he was a member of the Carthage Light Guard, a military organization that won wide fame.
He was married in Carthage January 2, 1890 to Miss Kathryn BettsSee 2nd photo at right, a member of a prominent Carthage family, who with the son Herbert B. Wolcott of El Paso, are the immediate survivors. He also leaves two brothers.
At the time of his death he was a director in the Marion and Jasper County Building and Loan Associations.
Mr. Wolcott was an active member of Grace Episcopal church for many years and was serving as a vestryman at the time of his death. He also was a member of Carthage Lodge No. 529 B.P.O. Elks and of the Carthage Lions Club.

Served in Legislature
Mr. Wolcott also was prominent in Democratic circles in this district. He was elected to the state legislature as the representative from the eastern district in 1924 and served one term. In 1928 he was his party's nominee for assessor of Jasper county.
He was a member of the McCune-Brooks Hospital board at the time of his death. He was appointed to the board when the construction of the new hospital was authorized by vote of Carthage citizen and proved a valuable member of the board in the handling of the complex building problems and also in the management of the institution.
Mr. Wolcott's death takes from Carthage one of its outstanding citizens. He was possessed of a disposition which won friends and held them. He was a good citizen in the fullest meaning of that phrase.
