Lysander's interests were varied. He operated a farm of 427 acres. In addition, he was a member of the Rochester band for ten years, in which he played the ophecleide. With Wm. H. Jennings he built and operated a planing mill. He also held numerous public offices:
1853 Justice of the Peace for Avon Twp.
1856 Avon Twp. Supervisor
1861-1862 Member of Michigan State House of Representatives
1873 Michigan State constitutional commission
1866-1870 Oakland County Tresurer
1876 Avon Twp. Supervisor
1878 Candidate of Lt. Gov. of Michigan
He was also president of the Oakland County Agricultural Society for three years.
In business, he was one of the founders, and first president, of the Detroit and Bay City Railroad.
"The inventory of his esstate suggests the opulent lifestyle of a successful Victorian gentleman. Among his belongings were French china, a silver service, along with silver pitchers, trays, and goblets. His household furnishings included a marble top mahogany bureau, a nine-piece hair cloth parlor set, a sewing machine, oil paintings, engravings, several wood bedroom sets, and a glass aquarium."
