Clarence A. Lamoreux, 85, prominent northern Wisconsin attorney and former state legislator, died Wednesday afternoon at a hospital in Ashland following a lingering illness.
A practicing attorney for 60 years, Lamoreux enjoyed a wide acquaintance in Hurley and Iron county. He appeared frequently, up until recent years, as counsel for litigants in Circuit court for Iron county. He was a member of the law firm of Lamoreux and Cate.
Born in Portage county, Wisconsin, September 20, 1860, Lamoreux came to the Chequamegon Bay region in 1883 and settled in Ashland in 1884.
He was elected state senator in 1899 and served several years. He also served as county judge of Ashland county.
Active in civic and community affairs, Lamoreux was a member of the Ashland Masonic lodge, the Knights of Pythias, Elks lodge of Ashland and the Old Settlers club.
He is survived by his widow, two sons and three daughters.
Funeral services will be held Saturday afternoon at the First Presbyterian church in Ashland, the Rev. Marshall Olson officiating.
