Allan C. Garrigus, 80, last survivor of a long-time prominent Kokomo family and a postal inspector for 43 years, died at 2 a.m. Sunday in a hospital at Cincinnati where he and Mrs. Garrigus had made their home the last 11 years. He had been in a critical condition for some time with a heart disorder.
Mr. Garrigus was born March 14, 1870, at Greentown, the son of Capt. Milton and Susan W. Garrigus. As a small boy, he was brought to this city and reared in the Garrigus homestead at Taylor & Kennedy Streets. His father, one of the earliest settlers of Howard County, served as a captain in the Civil War and was active throughout a long life in legal, political, and patriotic circles.
The son attended the Kokomo schools, graduating from high school with the class of 1889. He entered postal service in 1891 as a clerk in the Kokomo Post Office, resigning that post later to become a deputy to his father in the office of County Auditor. While there, he received appointment as a postal inspector. He had served in the Cincinnati division, and at the time of his retirement in 1940 had his headquarters at Indianapolis. He was widely known in the service and received high commendation when he left because of the retirement age.
He was married October 12, 1891, to Miss Gertrude Heath at Elwood, and they established their first home in this city. Later they moved to locations more convenient for his service, returning to this city in the early 1920s and going to Indianapolis in 1927. Since his retirement, they have lived in Cincinnati. Last October, Mr. and Mrs. Garrigus celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary at the home of their son, Ross Garrigus, in Vincennes where the latter is editor of The Vincennes Sun Commercial.
Surviving with the widow and son are two daughters, Marjorie (Mrs. Fred Smith) of Cincinnati with whom Mr. and Mrs. Garrigus have been making their home, and Miss Louise Garrigus of New York City. there are three grandchildren. While a resident of Kokomo, Mr. Garrigus was a member of the Grace Methodist Church. On moving to Indianapolis, he placed his membership with the Central Avenue Methodist Church.
The body was brought to the Jacobs Funeral Home where services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday with interment in Crown Point Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home after 5 p.m. Monday.
