W.H. "DICK" ANSEL, JR.
13 Dec 1988
William H. "Dick" Ansel, Jr., 74, of Springfield, died Dec. 13 at
Sacred Heart Hospital, Cumberland, MD.
Born Jan. 23, 1914, at Springfield, Ansel was a son of the late
William H. and Catherine (Fields) Ansel.
Mr. Ansel was a graduate of Potomac State College, Shepherd College
and the West Virginia University College of Law. He was admitted to
the bar in 1948. He was a former Hampshire County school teacher who
was elected as a state delegate from 1942-48.
He was assistant state attorney general in 1948 and was the state
treasurer from 1950 to 1957 when he established a law practice in
Romney. Ansel was a director of the board of the Bank of Romney and
was named in Who's Who in American Law Journal, Who's Who in America
and an Outstanding West Virginian. In 1985 he was dubbed a Knight of
Olde Hampshire.
Mr. Ansel was a member of the American, West Virginia South Branch
Bar Associations and the Springfield United Methodist Church.
He was author of "Frontier Forts Along the Potomac and Its
Tributaries."
Surviving are his widow, Helen (Kauffman) Ansel; three daughters,
Connie Jean Keaton, Romney; Barbara Ann Carl, St. Marys; and Vickie
Jo Milleson, Springfield; three brothers, Willard M. Ansel,
Charleston; Dr. Thomas L. Ansel, Keyser; and Michael C. Ansel, San
Francisco, CA; two sisters, Virginia Allen, Springfield; and Betty
Catherine Lewis, Wadsworth, OH; eight grandchildren, and one great-
granddaughter.
Services were conducted Friday by the Rev. Sumner Sawyers and the
Rev. Elinor Mosser. Interment was in the Springfield Hill Cemetery.
