George Marlette Haight, 87, 219 W. Newell St., local attorney and former Assemblyman, Deputy State Attorney General, and Prominent Democrat, died late Tuesday at Crouse Irving Hospital.
Mr. Haight practiced law at his office in the Emerson Building on S. Salina Street before his retirement at the age of 80. He was a graduate of Syracuse University and it's College of Law in 1914. In the political area since 1912, Mr. Haight was elected Justice of the Peace for the town of Onondaga in that year and became State Assemblyman two years later. In 1924 he was re-elected to the Assembly. In 1917, Mr. Haight, was appointed Assistant District Attorney of Onondaga County and in 1921 named Secretary of the State Tax Department.
In 1923, he was appointed Deputy State Attorney General. In 1930, he was named U.S. Commissioner for the Northern New York Judical District during the Depression, he was lauded for paying all depositors in the Salt springs National Bank of Syracuse when it failed in 1934.
He was Democratic County Chairman from 1920 to 1922 and from 1932 to 1934. He was a candidate for Mayor of syracuse, as was his son Alfred, with whom he entered into Partnership, forming the law firm of Haight and Haight.
In 1906, Mr. haight married Gertrude M. Hyde, who died in 1945, he later married Jean E. Roberts, daughter of his former law partner John E. Roberts, who survives. Mr. Haight was a life' Elder of Valley Presbyterian Church and served as Lay Commissioner to the Presbyterian General Assembly in 1924. He was a past master of Konosioni Masonic Lodge and was made an honorary 33rd Degree Mason at Chicago in 1941.
Mr. Haight was a descendant of seven ancestors who served in the American revolution, including a member of the First Provincial Congress. He was a member of the Empire State Chapter, Sons of the American Revolution.
He is survived by his wife; two daughters, Mrs. Frank B. McLaughlin of Denver, and Mrs. Thomas B. Dixon; a son Alfred W. Haight, first Deputy State Controller in Albany, six grandchildren, Thomas B. Dixon Jr..,Mrs. Paul Hill, Frank B. McLaughlin Jr., George H. McLaughlin, Miss Anne McLaughlin and Margaret Ann Haight.
Services will be 11 a.m. tomorrow at the Greenleaf Funeral Home. Burial will be in Onondaga Valley Cemetery. There will be no calling hours, Contributions may be made to the Onondaga Valley Presbyterian Church.
Honorary bearers will be: Francis D. McCurn, James A. Farrell, John Farnham, Lawrence D. Wood, M. Harold Dywer, Lawrence W. Sovik Sr., Frank C. Love, George W. Lee, James D. Sctright, Herbert C. stratton, Clarence Spriggs, Crandall Melvin Sr., John H. Terry, George P. Savage, and George R. Feron.
