U.S. Congressman. Born in Stanford, New York, he studied law, was admitted to the bar and then proceeded to practice law in Duanesburg and Sherburne, New York. During the Revolutionary War, he served in the Continental Army, (1779-80). After the war, he resumed the practice of law, was a member of the New York State Assembly (1803-04) and was judge of the Chenango County court of common pleas, (1807-13). In 1813, he was elected as a Federalist to the Thirteenth Congress, serving until 1815. After his term, he continued practice of law until his death at age 82 in Brooklyn, New York.

    A view of lot 4140. The central monument here is inscribed on 3 sides. Otherwise, aside from the usual initialed footstones, there are 3 individual stones, and one unique footstone.
    [NOTE: There is no clue on the lot of Joel Thompson’s reburial here 7 years after his death, or of his relationship, if any, to others of the LYNDE family.
