Veteran State Legislator Found Dead in His Car
PENHOOK, Va.- Del. J. Brandie Allman of Rocky Mount, veteran member of the Legislature, was found dead in his completely submerged car in Smith Mountain Lake today, apparently the victim of a freak accident.
Franklin County Sheriff R. H. McBride theorized that as Allman, 62, sat in his car surveying some lakefront property he was interested in buying or leasing, the car moved down a slight incline and into eight or nine feet of water before Allman could get out.
Allman, an attorney, was in court yesterday morning. He left his office about 10:30 a. m., telling friends he was going to Smith Mountain lake near here to examine the property and would be back shortly after noon.
When Allman had not returned by late afternoon, McBride was notified. He and State Trooper L. W. Paisley went to the lake. There they found tracks near the shore.
McBride and the trooper got in a boat and about 1:30 a.m. they located Allman's car.
A state medical examiner said Allman apparently died about noon. His watch stopped at 11:58 a.m. (est). Death was attributed to drowning.
Funeral arrangements have not been completed,.
Born in Union Hall, Franklin County,l on Nov. 17, 1895, he was educated in the county's public schools, George Washington University, Georgetown University's law school and Bourne University in France.
He was a World War I veteran, and a member of the Methodist Church, Masons, American Legion, Lions, and the Franklin County, Va. and American Bar Assns.
In the House he was on the the general laws, labor, manufactures and mechanic arts, officers and offices at the Capitol, and insurance and banking Committees.
He was a Democrat and a former mayor of Rocky Mount.
Allman, 62. served in the House from 1926 to 1930 and again from 1948 to 1954. He was beaten in a bid for re-election in 1954, but returned to the Assembly last year.
The Rocky Mount attorney was a member of the Gray Committee.
