During the Civil War he led the 19th South Carolina Cavalry battalion and was wounded at Cold Harbor.

Col. William L. Trenholm of New York, a well-known summer resident of Falmouth
Heights died at his home in that city last week, of pneumonia, in the 65th year of
his age. Col. Trenholm was born in Charleston, S. C, and was graduated at South
Carolina college, class of '55. He was appointed United States Civil Service
Commissioner and served during 1885 and 1886. He then became Controller of the
Currency during President Cleveland's first administration, serving in that office
from 1886 to 1889. He was elected president of the American Surety Company of New
York in the latter year. In 1898 he accepted the office of president of the North
American Trust Company. He leaves a widow and eight children. His remains were taken
to Charleston for burial.
