U.S. Congressman. He immigrated to the United States with his parents, in 1839 and settled in New York City. He graduated from the College of the City of New York, in 1853, studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1861, practiced law in New York City and was a member of the New York State Assembly, in 1861. He was a member of the board of aldermen of New York City, (1863-64, 67-69), clerk of the common council, (1870-71) and chief clerk in the office of the New York City Mayor, (1877-78). In 1881, he was elected as a Democrat to the Forty-seventh Congress to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Fernando Wood and reelected to the Forty-eighth Congress, serving until 1885. An unsuccessful candidate for reelection, he resumed the practice of law until his death at age 78.
