Merchant, Former Assemblyman,
Dies In City This Morning
George H. Wiltsie, 94, of 65 Port Watson St., prominent Cortland merchant for over 50 years and a former state assemblyman, died this morning in Cortland Memorial Hospital.
He was born in Pittsford on Oct. 20, 1862, the son of James Martin and Emily Hastings Wiltsie. He moved to Cortland in 1902 and established the department store which still bears his name. He had lived here since that time.
Mr. Wiltsie was elected four times to the State Legislature, serving as assemblyman from Cortland County for one-year terms from 1915 through 1918.
An active member of the First Presbyterian Church where he was a former elder and trustee, he also was a member of the board of directors of the First National Bank and Dime Savings and Loan Association, and served as trustee of the Cortland YMCA.
Surviving are three sons, Dr. James W. Wiltsie of Binghamton, Raymond H. of Beaumont, Calif., and Harold of Cortland; a daughter, Miss Esther Wiltsie of Cortland; eight grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren.
Services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at the alte home, where friends may call Friday from 7:30 to 9 p.m. Dr. Ralph C. Lankler, pastor of the First Presbyterian Church, will officiate. Interment will be in Cortland Rural Cemetery.
Arrangements are by Beard Memorial Home.
