Son of James and Marion (Symington) Thorburn. Both born in Scotland. His father James Thorburn was the son of James and Christian Boe Thorburn and was born in Lesmahagow, Lanarkshire, Scotland. James and and Marion Thorburn are both buried in Maple Ridge Cemetery, Holt, Delhi Twp., Ingham Co., MI., as well as brothers, James S., Andrew J. and Robert R. Thorburn. Brother Thomas Thorburn and sister Jannet Thorborn Severance and her husband and children are also buried in Maple Grove Cemetery. Sister Anna C. Thorburn married John Bell. John N. Thorburn married Margaret S. Hendreson (Henderson) in 1886, and was the father of infant son, Donald John Thorburn (1894) and Harold Jay Thorburn.
Note: Obtuary gives birth year as 1860 but headstone shows 1861
