Retired Naval Capt. Darden Dead at 60
Thomas Francis Darden, 60, retired U.S. Navy captain and educational director for Northrop Aircraft, died of a heart attack late Saturday at his home, 1533 Addison Rd., Palos Verdes Estates.The Brooklyn-born Navy veteran graduated from the Naval Academy at Annapolis in 1920 and served with distinction in World War II.
He commanded the warships USS Benham and USS Reno, which he brought to the United States for refitting after it suffered severe battle damage, and also served on the staff of Adm. Donald Berry.
Capt. Darden was assigned to Samoa in 1949, serving as the island's military governor until his retirement in 1951. He was appointed educational and training director at Northrop in 1952.
He leaves his widow, Mabel Hutchinson Darden, and a mother, sister and brother in Wilmington, N.C.
Funeral arrangements are pending at McCormick Mortuary, Redondo Beach.
