Edward Patrick Francis Eagan was born on April 26, 1897, in Denver, City and County of Denver, Colorado. He grew up in a modest household and received his early education in Colorado.
He graduated from Longmont High School and later attended the University of Denver for one year. During this period, he distinguished himself as a boxer and won the western middleweight boxing title, an achievement that set the foundation for his later athletic career.
In 1920, Eagan competed in the Summer Olympic Games held in Antwerp, Belgium. He won the gold medal in the light heavyweight boxing division. He returned to Olympic competition in 1924, competing in the heavyweight division at the Summer Games, where he was eliminated in the first round.
Eagan later shifted his athletic focus to winter sports. In 1932, he joined the four man bobsled team led by Billy Fiske at the Winter Olympic Games in Lake Placid, New York. The team won the gold medal, making Eagan the first individual to win Olympic gold medals in both the Summer and Winter Games and the first American to achieve that distinction.
In 1927, he married Margaret Colgate, a member of the Colgate family. Eagan pursued a legal career and was admitted to the New York bar in 1932. He practiced law privately and later served for five years as an Assistant United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York.
With the onset of the Second World War, Eagan joined the United States Army Air Forces. He served in the Air Transport Command, traveled extensively in the course of his duties, and received military decorations. He retired from military service with the rank of lieutenant colonel.
After the war, Eagan was appointed chairman of the New York State Athletic Commission. He served in that position until 1951, when he resigned and returned to private legal practice.
On December 13, 1948, he completed a round the world journey by scheduled commercial airlines, covering 20,559 miles with 18 stops. The journey set a record at the time for the fastest commercial circumnavigation of the globe.
Edward Patrick Francis Eagan died on June 14, 1967, in Rye, Westchester County, New York, at the age of seventy. He was buried at Greenwood Union Cemetery in Rye, Westchester County, New York.
