Businessman and United States Congressman. He was born on November 12, 1858, in New York, New York County, New York. He was the son of financier August Belmont and Caroline Slidell Perry Belmont and was born into a family of significant wealth and political influence. He was educated at the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland, graduating in 1880. Following graduation, he served briefly as a midshipman in the United States Navy before resigning his commission in 1881. After leaving naval service, he entered the financial world through his father's banking firm, August Belmont and Company. Upon his father's death in 1890, he inherited substantial wealth, which he used in part to develop Belcourt Castle, an elaborate summer residence in Newport, Rhode Island. The estate became one of the most distinctive architectural statements of the Gilded Age and reflected his interest in European design and aristocratic traditions. In 1896, he married Alva Erskine Smith Vanderbilt, a prominent social leader and the former wife of William Kissam Vanderbilt. Their marriage linked two of the most influential families in American society at the turn of the twentieth century. Belmont entered public life at the end of the century and was elected as a Democrat to represent New York's Thirteenth Congressional District in the United States House of Representatives. He served a single term from 1901 to 1903. During his time in Congress, he supported issues aligned with the Democratic Party of the era, including opposition to imperial expansion and advocacy for naval preparedness. Oliver Hazard Perry Belmont died on June 10, 1908, in Hempstead, Nassau County, New York, at the age of forty-nine. He was entombed in the Belmont Mausoleum at Woodlawn Cemetery in the Bronx, Bronx County, New York. The mausoleum was designed by the architectural firm Hunt and Hunt and was inspired by the Chapel of Saint Hubert at the Château d'Amboise in France.
