US Congressman. The grandson of Goodyear Tire founderF.A. Seiberling and cousin of CongressmanFrancis Seiberling, John Seiberling graduated from Harvard in 1941 and served in the Army during World War II, attaining the rank of Major and helping plan transportation for the D-Day invasion and other European operations, for which he received the Legion of Merit and Bronze Star Medal. He received a law degree from Columbia University in 1949 and became an attorney, first in New York City, and later for Goodyear in Akron. He served as a member of the Tri-County Regional Planning Commission and Akron's Regional Development Board and Metropolitan Housing Authority. In 1970 he was a successful Democratic candidate for the US House of Representatives and served eight terms, 1971 to 1987. Seiberling was an opponent of the Vietnam War and helped author the War Powers Act. He also played a role in drafting laws related to federal lands, including establishing Cuyahoga Valley National Park, the first one in Ohio. In addition, he was also an author of the Alaska Lands Act of 1980, which doubled the size of US national parks and wildlife refuges and tripled the area of federally designated wilderness. From 1992 to 1996 he was a member of the faculty at the University of Akron Law School and headed its Center for Peace Studies. In 2001 he received the Presidential Medal of Freedom. Akron's John F. Seiberling Federal Building and a professorship at the University of Akron were named in his honor.
