Clare Retan was born in Hudson, Lenawee County, Michigan, the son of Frank Arthur Retan and Florence Agnes Friend Retan. He had two sisters, Mrs. Bud Goodwin, of Adrian, Michigan and Mrs. Raymond Page, of Rollins, Michigan. He was the husband of Fern Inez Listeman Retan.

Mr. Retan was a graduate of The University of Michigan Law School. After graduation, he became associated in te practice of law with Grant Fellows, a former justice of the State Supreme Court, and Judge Bert Chandler.

A ten year Assistant Attorney General of the State of Michigan, Mr. Retan was appointed the State Attorneys' General in October 1926 by Michigan Governor Alex J. Groesbeck. He served for three months until William W. Potter took office.

Mr. Retan died suddenly on July 1, 1931 in the summer home of J.C. Reiman, in Windsor, Ontario, Canada, following an attack of acute indigestion and heat prostration.

He was survived by his wife, Fern and his two sisters.
