Funeral services for W. Allan Newell will be held Thursday at 2 p.m. at the First Baptist Church, with the Rev. Donald Casselman officiating. Burial will be in the~ Ogdensburg Cemetery.
Calling hours will be at Mr. Newell's residence at 415 Caroline St. Wednesday evening from 7 it, 9 p.m. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the charity or church of the individual's choice. Mr. Newell died at 9:30 p.m. Monday (April 4, 1977) at Hepburn Hospital, where he had been a patient for three weeks.
Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Anthony (Claire) Menkel of Birmingham, Mich., a son G. Judson Newell of Prescott, Ont., 10 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Mr. Newell was born April 22,1883, the son of Albert A. and Addie Priest Newell. He attended Ogdensburg schools and prepared for college in the classical academic department of the old Potsdam Normal School. He graduated from Williams College at Williamstown, Mass., in 1905 with a degree of bachelor of arts.
Returning to Ogdensburg, Mr. Newell worked for a year for a wholesale company of which his father was president. The following year, he became interested in a company manufacturing household hardware, principally curtain rods. This company became the Newell Manufacturing Co. He was honorary president of the company.
He married Edith DeLano Judson of Middleport, N.Y. in 1917. She predeceased him in 1956. Mr. Newell served with the U. S. Army during World War I.
Upon his return to Ogdensburg, Mr. Newell became involved in politics. As a Republican State committeeman, he was sent as a delegate to many state conventions. In 1927 he was elected mayor of Ogdensburg.
In 1930, he was appointed by Governor Franklin D. Roosevelt to the Bridge Commission. He was elected assemblyman from the first district of St. Lawrence County in 1932 and t was reelected twice, completing six years in the state legislature.
While in the Assembly, Mr. Newel1 was a member of both the Rules and Ways and Means Committees and chairman of the Civil Service Commission. He also served on the Joint Legislative Committee on Interstate Cooperation and represented New York State in the American Legislators Association.
Active in the business life of Ogdensburg all his adult life, Mr, Newell served as first vice president of the Ogdensburg Trust Co. and senior vice president of the St. Lawrence County Savings Bank for many years.
Mr. Newell was also founder and chairman of the board of Western Newell Co in Freeport, 111., Drapery Hardware Co., in Monrovia, Calif, and subsidiary companies in Wisconsin and Toronto.
Mr. Newell was selected historian for the 200th anniversary of the founding of Ogdensburg celebrated" in 1948. He was elected to the Academy of Political Science of the United States.
An enthusiastic alumnus of Williams College, he was one of the founders of the Williams Club in New York City. He was a life trustee of Clarkson College in Potsdam. Clarkson awarded him an honorary doctor of humane letters degree.
He donated $150,000 to the Remington Museum so that the new fire proof addition gallery could be added.
Mr. Newell, always a supporter of high school sports, was a middle distance runner at Williams College. Later he founded and organized the Northern High School League in 1908 with OFA, Malone, Massena, Gouverneur and Canton the charter schools.
He was a member of the Ogdensburg Elks Lodge and the First Baptist Church.
