Lawyer; Civic Leader; Entrepreneur. Founded the oldest continually operating law firm in the United States: Bobo, Carlisle & Edwards, which operates today as the Bean Law Firm, Spartanburg, SC. Served on the first Board of Trustees of Wofford College 1851-1861, and again 1863-1885 (twice as chairman). Elected Dec. 6, 1860 as a delegate to the SC Secessation Convention. A signer of the South Carolina Declaration of Secession from the Union during the formation of the Confederate States of America. Served in the Congress of South Carolina 1862-1864. Member of Central Methodist Church (first church in Spartanburg 1837) 1839-1885; Superintendent of Sunday School 1841-1880. Delegate to Methodist General Conference. Father-in-law of civic leader John W. Carlisle (1827-1914).


Son of Burwell Bobo, Sr. and Elizabeth Roebuck. Burwell Bobo, Sr. was born April 13, 1763, in Albemarle, Virginia, and died December 10, 1830, in South Carolina. He married Elizabeth "Betsy" Roebuck October 15, 1786, daughter of George Roebuck and Mary. Elizabeth was born 1763 in South Carolina, and died October 20, 1851.

Simpson Bobo married Nancy Holland Foster c.1833. She was the daughter of Anthony Foster, Jr. and Elizabeth Bobo of Foster's Tavern, Cedar Springs, SC.

    This portrait of Simpson was painted about 1825, about the time he completed his law studies. It hangs today in the parlor of Walton Carlisle Beeson in Spartanburg, SC. He was the son of Burwell Bobo and Elizabeth Roebuck and the grandson of Sampson Bobo.
