[LEMUEL WHITTLESEY, b. in Newington, Conn., May 16, 1740. Mr. Whittlesey lived quietly on the farm in this district until he was old enough, and his father called him to take part in the Colonial Wars. Lemuel became a teamster and was in the army at the front on Lake Champlain. Nov. 15, 1764, Lemuel Whittlesey married Hannah Wells, b. April 22, 1742, the daughter of Robert Wells. Mr. Whittlesey again settled down to farm life in Newington, Conn., which was a part of Wethersfield. On the 25th of August, 1765, Mr. and Mrs. Whittlesey acknowledged their baptismal covenant at the church in Newington, and afterwards took great interest in the affairs of the church. They are mentioned as members of the church by Rev. Joshua Belden in 1780. Mr. Whittlesey was one of the "seaters" at that time, he was also one of a "committee to loan money for the schools"; 1781 one of a "committee of the society"; "one of a committee for looking into the state of the parsonage, and of the Kensington moneys," reappointed in 1782; 1785, one of a "committee to meet the committee from the General Court to appoint the place for the new meeting-house to stand." In May, 1779, Lemuel was commissioned by the General Assembly as lieutenant of the 5th company or trainband in the 6th regiment of the state of Connecticut. [Colonial Records of Conn., 1779.] Mrs. Whittlesey d. April 3, 1810; Mr. Whittlesey d. Aug. 30, 1823.
They had the following children:
1. Hannah, b. June 7, 1765; m. Elijah Gridley.
2. Roger, b. Dec. 9, 1767; m. (1) Nancy Smalley; (2) Anne Hathaway.
3. Dorothy, b. Mar. 18, 1770; m. Joshua Belden.
4. Lemuel, b. July 3, 1772; d. Oct. 8, 1785 by the accidental discharge of a gun.
5. Chauncey, b. April 18, 1775; d. in infancy, Oct. 6, 1776.
6. Chauncey, b. Oct. 14, 1777; m. Miss Willard, daughter of John Willard of Lenox, Mass. who m. the granddaughter of Lord Darcy, Earl of Rivers, and came early in the century from Kent to New England. They resided in Lenox, Mass., where Mr. Whittlesey was a merchant, and he d. Oct. 21, 1821. They had no children.
7. Asaph, b. July 13, 1778; d. Jan. 7, 1780.
8. Asaph, b. April 7, 1782; m. Laura Kellogg.
