He served as a Diplomat in the US State Department for many years with his last assignment being Ambassador of Costa Rico in 1910.
He lived in San Francisco for many years and was President of the SFO Chamber of Commerce.
He died in a hospital in Battle Creek, Michigan after a long illness. He was buried next to his wife who passed away in 1908 and was buried in New York.
He had 5 daughters who survived him.
