He was born on April 1, 1932, in Providence, RI to the late Joseph and Nazha (Simon) Solomon, and remained a resident of Providence his entire life. Both his parents were emigres from a tiny village named Kfarsghab in Northern Lebanon. When the people of Kfarsghab left Lebanon to seek fortune and fame, they landed in three places: Sydney, Australia; Providence, RI; and Easton, PA.
In 1954 his life changed for the infinitely better when he married the late Sarah (Symia) Solomon of Easton, PA. This furthered the bond between the tight-knit Lebanese communities in both cities. They became a team in the truest sense of the word. Sarah passed away in 2006.
He was the devoted father of Donna M. Harrison of Providence; Former Providence City Council President Michael A. Solomon of Providence; Sharon A. Solomon-Santilli of North Providence; and Anthony E. 'Babes' Solomon of North Providence.
He was the loving father-in-law to Denise Solomon; Mark Santilli, Sr.; Nancy Solomon; and the late Andy Harrison.
To his grandchildren he was 'Jiddo' and was devoted to each one: Elissa Kingsland and Anthony Harrison, III; Tarah Provencal (Paul), Alanna Scott (James) and Lauren Monaco (Sean); Lindsay Lynch (Timothy) and Mark Santilli, Jr. (Stephanie); and Samantha Sowik (Jason).
He leaves 12 great-grandchildren: Adele, Milan, Deacon, Violet, Elliot, Michael, Isla, Emilia, Christopher, Nora, Layne, and Noah. Anthony took great pride in remembering all his grandchildren's and great-grandchildren's names without help.
Anthony was predeceased by his siblings Sam Solomon and his wife Rose; Jean Azar and her husband Tanous; and John Solomon, Sr. He leaves behind his youngest brother Donald Solomon, Sr. and his sister-in-law Jeannette Solomon.
He was also predeceased by in-laws Mary Ann Solomon; Irene Samyia, Tony and Rose Symia, Leonard Symia; Matilda and Raymond George; and Joan Marie and Mitch Daniels.
He was predeceased by his uncle Fred Simon and aunts Eva and Hilda Simon.
He also leaves many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends around the world.
Anthony was well-known for his catch phrase about America: "It's a hell of a country!"
Anthony and Sarah together embarked earnestly on their quest for the American Dream. In 1957, after the birth of their first two children, they opened Anthony's Drug Store on Manton Avenue in Providence, RI where Anthony served as a registered pharmacist.
Countless hours were spent in the drugstore which led Anthony to be an important part of this working-class neighborhood. Servicing the needs of people from all walks of life became his calling as well as his occupation.
Anthony took the next step in the American Dream by running for State Representative in 1966 and winning his first election.
He served 10 years in the Rhode Island House of Representatives, serving his neighborhood faithfully, while also spending many hours weekly at the drugstore meeting the needs of his loyal customers.
In 1976 Anthony took the bold step of running for State General Treasurer against a 28-year incumbent. Against all odds Anthony won this election and transformed the Treasury office into a modern organization and achieved record results during his tenure.
As General Treasurer, Anthony served on many commissions and boards dealing with the public's finances. He also was a member of the National Association of State Treasurers including serving as President during 1980-1981.
In 1984 he took on another challenge by running for Governor of the State of Rhode Island. Four years later, he again ran for General Treasurer and was returned to office by Rhode Island's astute voters, and won reelection once more in 1990. He served until 1993 when he retired from elected office, but not public service.
Anthony was very proud when he was named man of the year by The Christian Brothers Boys Association of LaSalle Academy, his alma mater, in 1979.
Anthony was an active member of many religious, civic, and political associations during his life, and he took great pride in the National Association/Apostolate of Maronites (NAM). Anthony's travels across the country with NAM afforded him the opportunity to meet other Lebanese American Maronite Catholics in every state. Anthony and Sarah were instrumental as founding members of this national organization linking all Maronite Catholics across the USA. Their vision for NAM, which came to fruition, was that Maronite Catholics could bond across state lines and be in an affinity group to promote the religion and fellowship of all Maronite Catholics. Anthony served as President of this lay organization during its early formative years.
For over 50 years he devoted his time to NAM, both nationally and locally. Locally, he was a dedicated parishioner of St. George's Maronite Catholic Church, now located in Cranston, RI.
In July of 1999 in Minneapolis, MN, Anthony and Sarah were presented with the prestigious Gold Massabki Award by the National Apostolate in recognition of their characteristics of true Christian values; qualities of national leadership and example to the Apostolate; and devotion above and beyond the call of duty to the Maronite Catholic Church in the USA.
Calling hours will be held on Sunday, February 27 from 3 PM to 7 PM at St. George's Maronite Catholic Church, 1493 Cranston Street, Cranston, RI 02920.
Divine Liturgy for the Faithfully Departed Anthony J. Solomon will be celebrated on Monday, February 28 at St. George's Maronite Catholic Church at 10 AM, followed by encryptment in the Garden Mausoleum at St. Ann's Cemetery, Cranston.
In lieu of flowers, please make donations in honor of Anthony to St. Jude's Children's Hospital in Memphis, TN.
