CARROLLTON, Miss. Aug. 5 -Dr. William Hayne Leavell, 80, who died three days ago at his home at Houston, Texas, was buried this afternoon in Evergreen Cemetery. The service was conducted by the Rev. Mr. Harris, pastor of the Presbyterian Church, assisted by Dr. Marion of Greenwood and Dr. Thacker, general evangelist of the Southern Presbyterian Church. For about 40 years he had been one .of the outstanding and most influential ministers of the Southern Presbyterian church. He was a native of South Carolina. He received part of his education under the late Dr. Broadus, noted theological educator. As a young minister he went first to Jackson, Miss. From there he went to New York, where he was for quite a while pastor of a prominent church. Later he was pastor of churches at Manchester, New Hampshire and at Boston. He accepted a call to Meridian.
About 30 years ago he went to Houston, Texas, to assume pastorate of the First Presbyterian Church. Soon after his inauguration, President Wilson offered him the post of ambassador to Guatemala, which he accepted and held throughout the Wilson regime. It was while engaged in his pastorate at Jackson that he married Miss Mary George, a daughter of the late Senator James Z. George, then a judge of the State Supreme Court. Her death, occurred at Guatemala City.
They are survived by four children, James G. Selden and Miss Kate Leavall of Houston and Prof. Hayne Leavall of Chicago.
