William was the oldest son of Dr. John Wesley Wirt and Margaret S. Wirt Mitchell. He was Chief Deputy of the United States District of Chicago and was in Chicago at the time of his death. His funeral was held at Grace Church, Chicago. Then his body was transported to Elkton, Maryland where he was buried in the Elkton Cemetery.
