Bromeley, Ferris, and another man entered a canoe on the Grand River at the lower side of a dam, and the canoe was carried by the backwash of the water going over the dam to the edge of the waterfall, and all fell out. Bromeley and Ferris were held at the dam by the backwash. The water was 10 feet deep, and they were tumbled about and submerged part of the time. Their companion drifted downstream and was rescued.
McArthur waded along the top of the dam in water 2.5 feet deep and jumped over the dam into a rowboat that had been pushed into the water and was being held close to the dam by the backwash near Bromeley and Ferris, but the boat shot from under him and upset. It drifted back to the dam, caught McArthur, and held him against the dam under the waterfall. He forced the boat far enough from him so that he got his head out of the water, but he continued to be engulfed at times. A man near the bank threw a slip noose of a rope over McArthur's extended wrist, and McArthur was drawn away from the waterfall and out of the water. McArthur was not seriously affected. Bromeley and Ferris were drowned.
