William Richard “Bill” Clyburn, age 83, of Kershaw, passed away, Tuesday, February 4, 2020, at MUSC Health, Lancaster. Born in Westville, he was a son of the late Stephen William Clyburn and Vermell Truesdale Clyburn. Bill, as he was known in the community, loved to serve and help others. He served our country in the United States Army on the 508th Airborne Regimental Combat Team. Mr. Clyburn served his community in many different roles. He had served as coroner of Kershaw County, mayor of the Town of Kershaw, four-term member of the South Carolina House of Representatives, a member and past president of the Shrine Club of Camden, past president of the Kershaw Chamber of Commerce, a member of the Kershaw Rotary Club, a lifetime member and elder of the Kershaw Presbyterian Church now known as Kershaw Evangelical Presbyterian Church , a member of Springdale Hall Club, a past board member of Kershaw County Memorial Hospital, and a member of the board of Directors of First Palmetto Bank.

Bill’s work ethic, energy, and entrepreneurial spirit were evident in his business life. He owned and operated Bill Clyburn Chevrolet of Kershaw and Bill Clyburn Realty of Kershaw. In addition to helping others buy and sell property, he also invested in residential and commercial real estate. He was instrumental in locating the Kershaw Correctional Institute and Carolina Motorsports Park in Kershaw.

Mr. Clyburn was tireless in his efforts to serve his country, his community and his business. He brought the same energy to his love of the outdoors, his family, and most of all, his wife and son.

Mr. Clyburn is survived by his wife, Joan Bennett Clyburn of the home; a son, William R. Clyburn, II and his wife Betsy of Charleston; 3 granddaughters, Melissa Robinson and her husband David of Kershaw, Hannah Lyles and her husband Warren Nutt, and Sarah Lyles all of Charleston; 2 great grandchildren, Blake Truesdale and Austin Robinson, a sister, Vera C. Phillips of Kershaw and a number of nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Richard Bennett Clyburn and 4 siblings, Franklin Clyburn, Mendel Clyburn, Catherine Gardner and Stephen Clyburn.

Funeral services for Mr. Clyburn will be conducted, Friday, February 7, 2020, in the sanctuary of Kershaw Evangelical Presbyterian Church, 201 N. Cleveland Street, Kershaw by the Reverend Scott Mosley and the Honorable Vincent Sheheen. A private family burial will follow the service in the Kershaw City Cemetery.

The casket will be placed in the church sanctuary at 1:00 p.m., Friday and the family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church Fellowship Hall.
