Continental Congressman, Maryland Governor. He graduated from William and Mary College in 1753, studied law, and became an attorney in Annapolis. He served in the Maryland House of Delegates from 1757 to 1766. Plater was St. Mary's County Justice of the Peace from 1766 to 1771 and from 1771 to 1773 was Judge of the Provincial Court. At the start of the Revolution he was appointed to the Maryland Council of Safety. He was a member of the Continental Congress from 1778 to 1781, and a member of the Maryland Senate from 1781 to 1788. In 1788 Plater was President of the State Convention that ratified the US Constitution, and he was a Presidential Elector in 1789 and 1792. In 1791 he was elected Governor of Maryland, the second person to hold that office. He took office in November 1791 and died just three months later. During Plater's brief term the state ceded the District of Columbia to the federal government as the site of the new national capital. George Plater was the father of Congressman Thomas Plater. Sotterly, the Plater estate, still stands along the banks of the Patuxent River near Hollywood, St. Mary's County. It is operated as a museum and is open to visitors during the summer.
