Dr. McRobert was born in Springfield, Vermont, on February 14, 1804. He moved with his parents to Clinton County, New York, in 1808, where he lived until age 25. Lured by the prospective advantages of the west, he departed for Michigan in 1837, and settled in the town of Mason. He was the first physician to reside in the city of Mason, and only the second to reside in Ingham County. He had previously practiced medicine four or five years in the East. For his own convenience, he built an office which was found useful for a variety of purposes -- doctor's office, County Register's office office, and also, as the doctor said, almost a courthouse. He operated a drug store in Mason until 1848, when he sold it to Dr. D. W. Halstead, and stopped practicing medicine in 1850. In 1871, he became the first president of First National Bank of Mason, a position which he retained until his death in 1884. Dr. McRobert was the first register of deeds in Mason from 1838 through 1840.

He was first married to Lydia Ladue, who died in 1836 at age 29. He had two children with Lydia: Augusta Ann McRobert in 1834 and John William McRobert in 1835. He later married Nancy Abbott, with whom he had at least three daughters and one son. Dr. McRobert died at his home from complications of gangrene in his foot at 2:15 pm on Sunday, October 5, 1884.
