William Edgar Culkin, 88, widely -known Duluth pioneer, died Saturday at his home at 2328 Woodland Avenue, where he had resided for 50 of the 53 years he lived in Duluth.

Retired from active civic life in his later years, Mr. Culkin was influential in many fields during his life in Minnesota, since 1881.

He was born in Oswego, NY, Oct 15, 1860 and began the study of law prior to moving westward. In Waverly he taught school and later gained admission to the bar at Buffalo, Minn. He served for several years as Wright county attorney, elected from Waverly.

It was during his years as a school teacher that he married Hanna Alice Young, Montrose, daughter of John Young, Minnesota Pioneer and Civil War veteran. They were wed July 6th, 1886.

While in Wright county, he served as state senator for Minnesota.

He came to Duluth in 1896 and a year later was appointed register of the Duluth land office by Theodore Roosevelt. He resumed practice of law in Duluth and was admitted to practice before the U. S supreme court.

Mr. Culkin possessed an avid interest in history and in 1922 founded the St. Louis County historical society, serving as its president for the ensuing 15 years. He authored a number of historical papers and treatises.

He served as an associate editor of the Duluth Herald for many years until the middle 1930s.

Lake Culkin, located 75 miles north of Duluth in Lake county, was named in his honor in 1937.

Mr. Culkin was well-known as a speaker and wove his experiences in teaching, history, and law into many interesting lectures. He was a member of the St. John the Evangelist Catholic parish.
