DEATH CLAIMS BLACKSMITH OF EARLY PERIOD
∼William Hilsdorf, 88, of 221 Garfield St., who with his father, William Hilsdorf Sr., operated at East Avenue and Stillson Street, one of Rochester's early blacksmith shops, died yesterday (Feb. 15, 1945) after five weeks' illness.
Mr. Hilsdorf, a native of Germany, was brought to Rochester by his parents at the age of nine, shortly after the close of the Civil War. After some years with his father, Mr. Hilsdorf went to work for the Buffalo, Rochester & Pittsburgh Railway, now the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad, as a railroad blacksmith. Later, he worked for several years on the construction of the Panama Canal and finally returned to Rochester to go to work for N. D. Knowlton Company, a paper box machinery manufacturer. He retired 12 years ago. He was a member of the Foresters of America.
Surviving him are his widow, Anna; three sons, William H., Henry J., and Herman J. Hilsdorf; two daughters, Florence A.; and several nephews and nieces. The last rites were held at the Reese Funeral Home, 40 West Ave., at 3:30 p.m. tomorrow. The interment was in White Haven Memorial Park.
