Bruce Cartwright Sr. "made his home at the Blaisdell Hotel, Fort street. He was the son of Capt. Alexander Joy Cartwright Jr. ,of New York City, marine master, and his wife, Eliza Ann Gerrit Van Wie, member of an old-established family of Albany, New York. His wife, whom he married in 1881, in Oakland, California, was Mary Louise Wells before her marriage. She died several years ago.
Cartwright spent his entire life in Hawaii, mostly in Honolulu, with the exception of several years while attending school in the mainland and while on brief visits to the States. He was one of the trustees of the Queen Emma Estate and other estates and considered one of the leading business men of the city. He was also general agent of the Preferred Accident Insurance Company for the Territory and general agent of the New York Board of Underwriters.
Former Peruvian Consul:
Cartwright was consul for Peru in the Territory from 1892, the last year of the Hawaiian monarchy, to 1911, when he resigned. He was a member of the Pacific Club, the Commercial Club, the Society of California Pioneers, and the Sigma Phi fraternity of St. Augustine Military Academy, Benecia, California, where he finished his education, his early education being received at Punahou, this city.
In 1866 Cartwright began his business career in this city, becoming associated with his father, the late Captain Cartwright, whom he succeeded on his death in 1892. He was very successful in business undertakings and was connected with many corporations and other mercantile ventures in Honolulu, leaving, it is believed, quite a respectable fortune.
The late Bruce Cartwright Sr. was a descendant of Edward Cartwright, mariner, who settled in Boston, Massachusetts, in 1662 and moved to Nantucket in 1676. His father, the late Captain Cartwright, was a blockade runner in the war of 1812 with England, was captured by the British and served nine months on a prison ship at St. John's, Newfoundland.
He passed away at the home of his son, Bruce Cartwright Jr., 665 Wyllie street, Nuuanu, the cause of death being attributed by Dr. F. F. Hedemann, his physician, to heart trouble, from which he had suffered since July 2, last.
The body was cremated yesterday. Private funeral services will be held at the Cartwright home, the ashes to be given burial in Oahu cemetery."
Surviving the deceased are a son, Bruce Cartwright of this city, and a daughter, Mrs. Fergus Allen, who resides in Mexico."
