The following appeared in Melvin's obituary in the Cameron newspaper:
Dr. Peters was born in Pennsylvania and was 78 years old this past fall. He came to Cameron to engage in the practice of medicine, following his graduation from the Kansas City school of medicine in 1905. Through the years he served the community and endeared himself in the hearts of many......
Dr. Peters not only faithfully served the community as physician and advisor but had taken part in the civic organizations of our city as well as being active in the work and support of his church, the First Methodist. Dr. Peters served Cameron as Mayor for two terms, he was at one time Missouri State Grand Master of the Odd Fellows Lodge, as well as taking an active part in the local Odd Fellows organizations, he was Chancellor Commander of the local Diamond Cross No. 80, Knights of Pythias; he was post commander of Elmer Ellis Post No. 33, American Legion and of special interest here is the fact that Dr. Peters often told of being tent mate with General Dwight Eisenhower during World War I, in which Dr. Peters served as a Captain in the Medical Corps. Dr. Peters was also a member of the local Masonic Lodge, but had not taken an active part there for a number of years.

The following is from a letter written by Glenn R. Peters (undated) to Mr. M.A. Peters, 125 Rainlo St., State College, Pa 16801:
Melvin's family moved from Oak Hall, Pa to Downs, KS when he was four. His father, John, was a farmer and carpenter. The family lived in a sod house and left primarily because of the drought and grasshopper plague of 1890. They moved by covered wagon from Downs to Cameron, Mo. Melvin later graduated from the University Medical school in Kansas City, Mo. and practiced medicine in Cameron from 1905 to 1947.
