Hon. Thomas Franklin Conway, 86, a former Lt. Governor of NYS, chairman of the Board of Directors of the Plattsburgh Press-Republican Co., president of the Ausable Chasm Co and form half-century one of the leading citizens of Plattsburgh and an influential Democrat in the North Country, died Friday at his residence.
Mr. Conway was a member of the Board of Directors of the Plattsburgh National Bank & Trust Co, a member of the Board of Directors of the Champlain Valley Hospital and a member of the Board of Visitors o the Plattsburgh State Teachers College.
He was born the son of John and Mary (Collins) Conway on a farm at Douglass in the Town of Chesterfield.
After finishing courses at Keeseville Academy, he was principal of the high school at Ausable Forks for a year, but soon began the study of law and was admitted to the NYS Bar in 1884. He began practice at Keeseville, but removed to Plattsburgh in 1887 and formed a partnership with the late John B Riley under the firm name Conway and Riley. In 1890, this partnership dissolved and Mrs. Conway became an employee of the firm Palmer, Weed, Kellogg and Smith of Plattsburgh. In 1897, Mr. Conway was admitted to practice in the Supreme Court of the US. He opened a law office in NYC in 1898 and carried on his practice there until retirement. He served both as a trial lawyer and as counsel in litigation of various types.
A member of the Democratic party, Mr. Conway had been chosen as a delegate to state and national conventions from 189-1944. His entry into politics was made in 1898 when he was nominated as attorney general. He served as Lt. Governor for one term, 1911-12. He was defeated in 1916 as a candidate for US Senate.
Mr. Conway is survived by two nieces, Miss Mary Bowe of Rockville Ctr, L.I. And Mrs. Genevieve Conway Holt of Keeseville; six nephews, Francis Bowe of Keeseville, Sgt. Edgar Conway and William, John, Franklin and Thomas Conway; a sister-in-law, Mrs. Martin Conway of Peru.
