US Congressman, Lawyer. He was a United States Representative from the State of Wisconsin. He was born one of five children as Charles August Kading to Karl August Kading (1839-1924), and his wife Dorothea Luise Bagans Kading (1834-1883), in Lowell, Wisconsin, on January 14, 1874. He also had a half-sibling named John George Kading (1884-1954). He was educated locally and attended the local country schools including the Horicon High School in Lowell, Wisconsin, before attending the prestigious University of Wisconsin in Madison, Wisconsin, and the prestigious law department of Valparaiso University in Valparaiso, Indiana, in 1910. Following his education and study of law, he was admitted to the bar in 1900 and commenced his practice of law in Watertown, Wisconsin, shortly thereafter. During this time, he also became interested in agricultural pursuits and politics. He then served as the District Attorney for Dodge County, Wisconsin, from 1907 to 1913, and a term as the Mayor of Watertown, Wisconsin from 1914 to 1916. During this time, he was also drafted during World War I, but he never served. He then decided to run for a seat in the United States Congress and was elected to succeed the outgoing United States Representative Edward Voigt (1873-1934), on March 4, 1927. A Member of the Republican Party, he then served Wisconsin's 2nd District (the Seventieth Congress, the Seventy-First Congress, and the Seventy-Second Congress), in the United States House of Representatives from March 4, 1927, to March 3, 1933. He was an unsuccessful Candidate for renomination in 1932. In total, he was elected in 1926, reelected in 1928, reelected in 1930, and lost renomination in 1932. Following his term in the United States Congress, he was succeeded in office by the incoming United States Representative Charles William Francis Henney (1884-1969), on March 4, 1933. After leaving the United States Congress, he resumed his practice of law until his death on June 19, 1956, at the age of 82. During his lifetime, he was also a member of several prominent organizations and clubs including the Freemasons, Elks, and the Knights of Pythias. He passed away from natural causes at St. Mary's Hospital in Watertown, Wisconsin, on June 19, 1956, five days after his 82nd birthday. Following his death, he was buried in Oak Hill Cemetery in Watertown, Wisconsin. He was married to Elizabeth Eugenia Sommers Holste Kading (1877-1925), in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, on November 6, 1900, and they had one child together, a son named Charles Earl Kading (1907-1992), who became a successful attorney in his own right, and served for many years as the proprietor of the Kading & Kading Law Firm in Watertown, Wisconsin, and as a Judge in Jefferson County, Wisconsin. His wife Elizabeth passed away unexpectedly after being involved in a car accident in Akron, Ohio, while traveling to Denver, Colorado, on July 31, 1925, at the age of 48, and she is also buried in Oak Hill Cemetery in Watertown, Wisconsin.
