Dr Coburn, State Senator, Dies
Well-Known Milton Physician Dead after illness of 10 days-was serving second term in Legislature.
Milton, Jan 21-Not in years has this community been plunged into deeper sorrow than was Milton Yesterday when the death was announced of State Senator Dr Irving S Coburn, and that sorrow was shared all over Chittenden County, where he had become so well know through his political and business activities. His death came after a week's illness with blood poisoning.
Dr Coburn was serving his second term in the legislature, his first having been served in 1912.
He was a prince of good fellows and enjoyed the affection of all who knew him in a remarkable degree. No worthy cause or individual sought aid from him in vain, and he was active in providing for the afflicted children of Vermont in causing to be erected the Home for Feeble-Minded at Brandon.
Born in Belvidere Aug 8 1874, the Oldest son of Henry and Alberta Shatttuck Coburn, he was educated in public schools and was graduated from Brigham Academy. He entered the University of Vermont, but after three years went to the Baltimore Medical college, graduating in 1901.
He came to this village 21 years ago, where he soon gained an enviable reputation as a physician. Ever ready to help others and deeply interested in town and sate affairs he served as a member of the school board and as a village trustee.
He was a member of the American Medical Association, the Chittenden Co Clinical society, Seneca Lodge No 40, A F and A M ; Burlington Commandery No 2, Knights Templar, Mount Sinai Temple, A A N O E S, Austin Camp, W of A.
He is survived by his wife and three children, Velma M., Richard W., and Janice B ; his aged mother; four brothers, Ray of Milton, Clarence, Vernal and Wallace of Belvidere; two sisters, Mrs Clark E Brigham of Winooski and Mrs Myron Potter of Belvidere.
The body will lie in state at the Methodist Church and services will be held Tuesday afternoon at 1:45 O'clock.
