Living for over one hundred years is an amazing feat. Loving others for over one hundred years is an amazing blessing. Joseph P. Lambert did both. Our beloved father, grandfather, and great-grandfather returned to his heavenly home on February 18, 2017, where he will continue to spread his love of the gospel and of family to others.
Joseph Prestwich Lambert, was born on May 27, 1916 in Salt Lake City, Utah, to Thornton Salmon and Sarah Prestwich Lambert. He was raised in Burley along with his siblings: Ray, Robert, Mary and Paul.
As a young man Joe enjoyed track meets, sledding, playing shinny in the streets, and movies at the local theater. He worked as a special delivery boy, a newspaper apprentice, and a sports writer for the local paper.
After graduating from Burley High in 1934, Joe attended BYU where he also enjoyed being a sports writer for the school newspaper. Joe served an LDS mission to the Netherlands from 1936-1938. His mission experience had a great impact on him and he shared stories, as well as the Dutch language, throughout the remainder of his life.
Joe married Zoe Hoorn in 1940 and they had two beautiful daughters, Judy and Carol. Shortly after their divorce, Joe was inducted into the U.S. Army during WWII and served in Korea.
It was while on furlough in 1946, that he met his future wife, Elva Terry, on a blind date in Burley. They soon knew they were to be together and were married in the Salt Lake LDS Temple on October 3, 1946. Their home and their hearts were quickly filled as they welcomed eight children: Gary, Gordon, Joan, Karen, Debra, Jon, Wendy and Marsha. These blessings multiplied as 41 treasured grandchildren and 84 adored great-grandchildren joined the Lambert family.
Joe was very active in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints throughout his life. He and Elva served a mission in 1986-87 to Colfax, WA., and served for many years in the Boise Temple. Joe had a strong and rich testimony of God's love and the Gospel. Many hearts and lives were touched as he shared these beliefs with family and friends. One of his greatest desires was that all could come to know and exemplify our Savior's love.
Joe was very involved in the community. In 1956, he was appointed U.S. Postmaster where he worked and served until his retirement in 1984. He was an active member of the Burley Kiwanis Club, serving as President, Vice President, and on the Board of Directors for several years. Joe enjoyed being a member of the Kiwanis' musical group, The Singing Ks.
Always one who loved sports and good sportsmanship, he was Co-Chairman of the Little League Football Program for 12 years. Joe and Elva rarely missed a game during the ten years they served as the score and time keepers for the Burley High football and basketball games.
Joe was an avid reader, loved good music, a champion on the ping pong table, and a worthy opponent any time a card game was played around the kitchen table! His healthy and happy life may have been due to his love of exercise, which included walking the canal banks of Burley and hiking trails he found as he visited his children.
During the last years of his life, while spending the winter months in Arizona, he spent many joyful hours riding his 3-wheel bike! Perhaps it was also due to the fact that he loved drinking pure grape juice, eating his greens, and enjoying one Coke a day! Those who knew him best have no doubt it was also the result of his living each day with an amazingly optimistic and positive attitude and exuberant love of life.
When Elva passed away in 2012, Joe decided to sell the family home and enjoyed the next few years living with his children in Arizona, California, Idaho, New Mexico and Utah. Grandpa Joe was a welcome and favorite house guest and made lifelong friends while leaving a memorable impression on many during this time. Our dad and grandpa truly was one-of-a-kind and never met a stranger! He shared his enthusiasm and love freely with all.
More than anything else, Joe loved his family. He took the time to write letters, expressing his love and support. Those that love him will always treasure his handwritten words of advice to them. His familiar signature of JPL/Dad/Grandpa always brought a smile as well as a feeling of peace and joy.
This dear man is deeply loved and will be missed by his children: Judy White, of Shoreline, WA, Carol (Wendell) Gadd, of Springville, UT, Carol Lambert, of Logan, UT, Joan (Tom) Johnson, of Albuquerque, NM, Karen Erickson, of Cottonwood Hts, UT, Debra (Von) Gibby, of Burley, Jon (Joan) Lambert, of El Dorado Hills, CA, Wendy (Kody) Thurston, of Phoenix, AZ, and Marsha (Tony) Hughes, of Scottsdale, AZ; 40 grandchildren; 84 great-grandchildren; his brother, Paul (Marie) Lambert, of Burley; and many nieces and nephews who loved their Uncle Joe.
Joe was preceded in death by his dear wife, Elva; cherished sons, Gary and Gordon; sweet grandson, Christopher Johnson; as well his much-missed siblings: Ray, Robert and Mary.
The funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 25, at the Burley LDS West Stake Center, 2420 Parke Ave., in Burley, with Bishop Kerry McMurray officiating.
Burial will follow in the Pleasant View Cemetery, with military rites provided by the Mini-Cassia Veterans Organization.
Friends may call from 6 until 8 p.m. Friday, Feb. 24, at the Rasmussen Funeral Home, 1350 E. 16th St., in Burley, and from 11:30 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. Saturday at the church.
