US Congressman. He served in the United States House of Representatives from the 3rd District of Wisconsin from January 3, 1975 to January 3, 1981. He served in the United States Merchant Marine from 1944 to 1946. From 1946 to 1948, he attended Austin Junior College in Austin, Minnesota where he earned an A.A. Degree. He served in the United States Army from 1951 to 1953 and earned a Bronze Star for his service in the famed 2nd Infantry Division in Korea. He later worked as an investment broker and manufacturer's agent for farm machinery. He went on to serve his first stint in the Wisconsin State Assembly from 1966 to 1975, where he served as assistant majority leader in 1973. In 1974 he defeated Republican Rep. Vernon Thomson for the 3rd District seat from Wisconsin, becoming the first Democrat to serve the district in 66 years. He served in the House of Representatives until 1981, after being defeated by Republican Steve Gunderson in the 1980 general election. During his service in the House, he cosponsored 22 bills that became law. A champion of safety and community, he worked to pass legislation that designated areas of Wisconsin to be wilderness, enabled farmer’s markets and direct sale of farm goods to consumers, established milk price supports, and regulated matters of agricultural safety. In 1988 he was elected to serve his second stint in the Wisconsin State Assembly and served until 1996.
