On 14 Jul 1881, Thurlow W. Barnes, 28, and Eda M. Austin, 27, were married in Boston, Massachusetts. The groom was born in Albany, New York, was a journalist, and was residing in New York. He was the son of William and Emily W. The bride was born in Dorchester, Massachusetts, and was residing in Boston. She was the daughter of William R. and Lydia H. This was the first marriage for both.[Massachusetts Marriage Record]

On 7 May 1890, Thurlow Weed Barnes was residing at Boston, Massachusetts, following the occupation of a publisher. He was born on 28 Jun 1863 in Albany, New York. He would be temporarily traveling abroad and intended to return to the U.S. in one or two years, accompanied by wife, Isabel Morris Barnes, and servant, Maria Hurst, aged 26. He was 37 years old, 6' 4 1/2" tall, had a fair complexion, blue eyes, and brown-grey hair. [U.S. Passport Application, New York County, New York]
