US Congressman. The son of Revolutionary War General and CongressmanArtemas Ward, Sr., the younger Ward graduated from Harvard University in 1783, studied law, and began a practice in Weston. He was active in the militia and commanded the Weston Light Infantry Company as a Captain from 1789 to 1793. Ward served in the Massachusetts House of Representatives from 1796 to 1800, and moved to Charlestown in 1800. In 1810 he was named to Harvard's Board of Overseers, serving until 1844. In 1811 he served again in the Massachusetts House. In 1812 he was the successful Federalist nominee for a US House seat, served two terms, 1813 to 1817, and was a leading opponent of US involvement in the War of 1812. He served in the Massachusetts Senate from 1818 to 1819 and was a Delegate to the 1820 state constitutional convention. From 1820 to 1839 he served as Chief Judge of the state Court of Common Pleas, afterwards living in retirement in Boston. His Weston home still stands and is privately owned. Artemas Ward, Jr. was the brother in law ofSamuel Dexter, who served in both houses of Congress, and as US Secretary of War and the Treasury.
