Mother's Name: Mary Gilbert
Dennis E. Alward of Clare is dead in the 71st year of his age. In the early 1900s he was a frequent visitor at Gladwin, and a man who was frequently heard in the Gladwin school houses advocating the cause of republicanism. He was known to many republicans of the county, who will sadly regret his death.
He was born in Niles where he also learned the printer's trade. He studied law at the U. of M., and upon his graduation engaged in publishing the Battle Creek Moon. In 1879 he purchased the Clare Press, afterwards selling and engaging in politics.. From 1893 to 1897 he was secretary to the state senate. From 1897 to 1913 he was reading clerk of the house of representatives at Washington. From 1904 to 1928 he served similarly each Republican National convention.
Mr. Alward was held in high regard by all factions of his party and no matter what faction held the reins of power his advice was sought in all campaigns. With Hon. G. J. Diekema he was made a honorary member of his party's state committee. The voice which gave his party advice is stilled and many there are who regret his passing.
Mr. Alward died at the Ford hospital, Detroit, from a stroke of paralysis. Gladwin County Record dated 6-5/1930 (Thanks, Tom, for this obituary!)
