Ernest J. Lonis, 75, of Hannibal, Republican member of the Assembly from Oswego county from 1934 to 1942, died Saturday afternoon in Auburn hospital. Operator of a farm, he was active in numerous agricultural organizations and on the Board of Visitors of Oswego State Teachers College until 1953. He was born in Hannibal Nov. 13, 1878, son of Lester and Betty M. Lonis. He was educated at Union Free School and after obtaining teacher's license taught three years in rural schools. Then he entered Oswego State Normal College in 1901, graduating in 1905. He specialized in manual training and taught two years in public schools in Altoona, Pa. In 1907 he took over the home farm, specializing in dairy, poultry and fruit. He was director, president and manager of the Fruit Growers' Co-operative Association, member of Golden Sheaf Grange, Hannibal and master of the county Pomona Grange and State Grange deputy master for Oswego County Farm Bureau, president of the bureau for four years and director of the New York State Farm Bureau Federation of which he served as treasurer from 1926 to 1934. He was director of the Central New York Regional Market Authority in Syracuse in 1933, served as vice-president for two years and then was president from 1935 to 1942. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Lois L. Lonis and a son, Maynard J. Lonis, and two step-children. Funeral was held Tuesday at 2 p. m. in Community church. Burial in Hannibal Cemetery.
