IN DEEP AFFLICTION Two Brothers Pass Away Within a Week. A. W. Weisbrod. the well-known attorney, is dead. The slender cord upon which his life had hung for many hours snapped in twain at a quarter after ten this morning. His illness was of short duration, resulting from a severe attack of nervous prostration combined with a disease of the kidneys that ended in the poisoning of the blood.
Not until Thursday was he taken ill, but within a short time of the approach of the disease, hope of saving his life had vanished. All Saturday night and Sunday his death was almost hourly expected. Coming as it has during the feeble condition of his aged mother, and following so closely upon the death of his brother, the stroke of the grim reaper has been rendered doubly sad.
The funeral will be held from the house at two o'clock Thursday afternoon. The Rev. John W. Greenwood will officiate, and the services will be held under the auspices of the masons.
Albert William Weisbrod, one of the most prominent citizens and attorneys of Oshkosh, was born in Oshkosh October 4, 1851, and has lived here continuously, except brief periods when attending school in eastern states or in Europe. His early education was secured in the city schools. From 1866 to 1870 he supplemented that education by a complete classical course at the Michigan university at Ann Arbor, from which he graduated with honor.
Returning to Oshkosh, he entered the law office of Felker & Weisbrod, of which his father was a member, and read law for one year. In 1871 he went to Europe and entered the university of Heidelberg. where he remained six months, taking a general course, including law lectures. He next entered the university of Leipsic, where he remained one year, and then entered the university of Berlin, where he remained six months, taking a general course at both the latter universities.
In July, 1873, he returned home and re-entered the office of Felker & Weisbrod, where he read law until admitted to the bar in 1874 From that time until Jan. 1, 1875, he remained in the law office as clerk. He was then admitted to the firm and continued the junior member until the death of his father in 1876. The firm of Felker & Weisbrod continued until July, 1877. when it was dissolved, and Mr. Weisbrod practiced alone until January, 1879. In year he formed a partnership with H. B. Harshaw. In February, 1885, C. R. Nevitt, Jr., was admitted as junior partner, and the firm name became Weisbrod, Harshaw & Nevitt. In 1889, Mr. Nevitt retired and A. E. Thompson became a member of the firm, continuing as such until Jan. 1, 1892, when he retired. Since that time Messrs. Weisbrod and Harshaw have continued the firm's practice.
Mr. Weisbrod has been quite prominent in politics as well as otherwise, being in political faith a stout Democrat. He served as postmaster during the term of President Cleveland, being appointed in 1886. He was a member of the Masonic order, the Winnebago county bar association and several other well known organizations.
The death of A. W. Weisbrod so soon after the death and burial of his brother Otto C. Weisbrod, inflicts a bereavement upon his aged mother and her family which will awaken the deepest sympathy of the community. And it calls to mind a similar sad affliction when the father and one sister died only a few days apart in 1876, Miss Alma, a bright and lovely daughter, was stricken with typhoid fever in April of that year and died on April 20 after a short illness. At the time of her funeral, the father, C. A. Weisbrod, one of the oldest residents and most prominent citizens, was low with the same disease and died on May 2. The present double bereavement is almost a counterpart of that which occurred in 1876. This second double loss will fall with terrible severity upon the aged mother whose sunset of life is thus darkened by so many clouds of death.
A. W. Weisbrod was one of the most prominent members of the bar. He was a man of good legal attainments and thoroughly methodical in his business and profession. He enjoyed the confidence of a large clientage, and his honesty and integrity needed no bond where his word was given. He never aspired to public office, except that he accepted the postmastership as a compromise in a warm contest over that appointment. In the recently tried treasury cases he was one of the attorneys for the defense and had done much of the investigation over the legal points of the case. He was not particularly a trial lawyer, leaving that branch of the business largely, to his partners, but in the study and investigation into cases, and in hunting for, finding and digesting the law, he was peculiarly fitted by temperament and taste.
