With the onset of World War II and the bombing of Pearl Harbor, Ray joined the Air Force Cadets and trained in the West Coast Training Command. During this time he also attended Arizona State University at Tempe. He graduated in the military as a second Lieutenant and pilot in 1944. He was then sent overseas with the 483rd Bomber Group with the 15th Air Force near Foggia, Italy. They were joined by the Tuskegee B51 escort pilots who performed an invaluable service to his unit by protecting the group formation from mig fire.
In 1946, he established Allmon Oil Co. and by 1949 was authorized to operate a Chevrolet franchise, which he continued to manage until 1968. During the 1950's, he also formed the Allmon Trucking Co. and the Allmon Construction Co. which built schools for Birch Tree and Fremont, MO.
He was president of the Winona Development Corporation that brought the Paramount Cap Factory to Winona which has operated for over 50 years as an economic asset to the community.
In 1964, Ray was elected State Representative to the Missouri General Assembly, serving two terms.
In 1967, he was appointed to the Missouri Public Service Commission as Chief of Operations and Transportation, serving until retirement in 1981.
He is survived by three daughters and their families, Adele and David Weatherly of Potosi, MO; Dianne and Robert Peck of Brookline Station, MO; and Alice and Robert Buell of Hot Springs, AR; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Ruby; brothers Dewey and Roscoe; and his parents, Rufus and Myrtle Allmon of Winona, MO.
A memorial service was held at Duncan Funeral Home in Winona, MO, with local arrangements under the direction of Thieme-ShadelHicks Funeral Service at Rivermonte.
Ray Allmon lived a full and active life and will be greatly missed by his family and all who knew him as a friend and public servant.
