Mr. Fancher represented the First Assembly district in the Legislature in 1916 and 1917 and previous to that time was supervisor of the First and Second wards for nine years. He had long been prominent in Republican politics in Jamestown and Chautauqua County.
Leon L. Fancher was born at Yorkshire, Cattaraugus county, Aug 15, 1867. He was the eldest son of George W and Calista A Livermore Fancher. His father was a dentist. When he was a child his parents moved to a farm in the town of Villenova, Chautauqua County, where he resided until he was 20 years of age.
He attended Forestville High school from which he graduated in 1889 as president of his class. He won a scholarship at Cornell University and entered the Law school in fall of 1889 and was graduated in 1891 with the degree of LLB. He came immediately to Jamestown to read law in the office John Woodward, later justice of the Supreme Court, and Eleazer Green. He was admitted to the bar in 1892 and was a law partner of J. Samuel Fowler for a few years, after which he practiced alone.
Mr. Fancher married Kate E. Waters of Cottage on Aug 7 1895 who survives him as well as seven children. Miss Genevieve E. Fancher, Mrs. Stanley E. Day, Elmer E. , Rollin A., Lincoln L., Pauline M., and Leon L. Fancher Jr. and a grandchild Priscilla Alden Day all of Jamestown. He served several years as a member of the Ellicott Hook & Ladder company, the Jamestown Volunteer Fire Department and was at one time secretary and treasurer of the department, and later served as president of the Exempt Fireman’s association. He was a member of the 113th Separate Company, National Guard of New York, in 1898.
In July 1906, Mr. Fancher was appointed by Major James L. Weeks supervisor from the First and Second wards to succeed Augustus F. Allen who resigned to run for member of assembly. He continued to serve in that capacity until July 24 1915 when he resigned to run for member of assembly. During his term of service on the board of supervisors of Chautauqua county he served on many important committees of the board among them the committee on building the present court house. He served as a member of assembly in 1916 and 1917.
In May 1917 he passed a Civil Service examination and was appointed municipal accounts examiner for the state comptrollers office, apposition he continued to occupy until the very hour of his death.
