Jess L. Angstman, Sr., 89, s well known Havre attorney whose distinguished career included serving Hill County as a state representative and state senator, died Sunday in a local hospital.
Funeral Mass will be at St. Jude's Catholic Church at 1 p.m. Wednesday. There will be no rosary.
Angstman was city attorney for the city of Havre from 1944to 1951 and from 1963 to 1965. He served in the state legislature as a representative from 1947to 1948 and from 1959 to 1960 and as state senator fro 1949 to 1957.
A long-time Democrat, at one time he ran for the office of lieutenant governor. He was appointed by Governor Donald Nutter to the board of State Department of Public Welfare and was reappointed by Governor Tim Babcock serving for eight years as vice chairman of the board.
Angstman was the 5th of 13 children bon to Jacob H. and Emma Trout Angstman, in Groton, S.D., February 25,1890.The family moved later to Farmington, Minn., then to Sauk Center, six miles east of Princeton, Minn.
In 1910 he graduated from Princeton High School attended night school at the St. Paul College of Law, working days at the St. Paul Daily News and the St. Paul Pioneer Press.
Angstman received an offer to operate the Harlem News at Harem on June 1,1912nand published that newspaper till the fall of 1913. He was appointed U.S. commissioner in August of that year and assisted in filing and taking final proof for several hundred homesteaders in Blaine County which included present-day Phillips County.
n 1913 Angstman filed on a homestead near Turner. While living in Harlem he passed the state bar examination in 1922 and engaged in the private practice of law at Harlem until 1927 at which he moved to Havre where he continued to practice law until his retirement several years ago. During that time he became known as a fine criminal lawyer defending more then 30 homicide and manslaughter cases as well as scores of persons accused of lesser crimes.
Angstman and Laurena Jesmer were married February 1916 in St. Paul. She died in 1956.
Angstman is survived by two sons Jess L. Angstman, Jr., and Paul W. Angstman both of Havre; two daughters Mary Jeanne Schwiets, St. Paul and Anne Arleen Jambor, Kalispell.
Twelve grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren also survive as well as his brothers, Ezra, Jack, Ralph, and Maynard, all of Princeton and a sister Esther McClean, Santa Monica, Calif.
