Journal of the House of Delegates of the State of West Virginia (April 30, 1974), pp. 1320 and 1321:
[Mr. Gilliam, Mr. Mathis and Mr. Queen offered the following resolution:
H. R. 2-"Commemorating the life of John J. Pelter, miner, educator, orator and legislator."
WHEREAS, John J. Pelter was born January 27, 1905, of immigrant parents in the coal fields of Carlisle, Fayette County, and by his initiative and enterprise excelled in his academic pursuits by capturing the state debating championship in the same year he graduated from Man High School as valedictorian of his class; and
WHEREAS, He continued his pursuant of knowledge by working his way through West Virginia University graduating with a bachelor's degree in political science and returned to Logan County as a teacher to earn a reputation as an educator and a student of government; and
WHEREAS, He commenced a potentially brilliant political career with his election to the House of Delegates in 1932 and 1934, being elected to the position of Speaker of the House in 1935 at the age of 29, the youngest man in the history of this State to hold the office; and
WHEREAS, He also served two terms in the Senate from the Seventh Senatorial District, representing the counties of Boone, Lincoln and Logan, until his retirement from politics in 1944 and, prior to his death on March 28, 1974, had suffered many years from a chronic illness; therefore, be it
Resolved by the House of Delegates:
That regret is hereby expressed by the members of the House of Delegates at the passing of John J. Pelter, and sincere sympathy is extended to his family and friends; and, be it
Further Resolved, That the Clerk is hereby directed to forward a copy of this resolution to the family of John J. Pelter.
At the respective requests of Mr. Queen, and by unanimous consent, reference of the resolution (H. R. 2) to a committee was dispensed with, and it was taken up for immediate consideration
and adopted.]
