U.S. Congressman. He graduated from Yale College in 1846, studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1848, and commenced to practice law in Naugatuck, Connecticut. He was clerk of the Connecticut State Senate in 1851 and served as a member of the State Senate in 1853. He was a judge of the New Haven County Court in 1854, Judge of the probate court (1854 to 1860), and served in the Connecticut State House of Representatives in 1856. During the Civil War, he organized the State Militia, serving as Colonel of the 2nd Regiment, Connecticut National Guard (1863 to 1866) and as Brigadier General in command of the regiment (1866 to 1870). He also was city attorney of Waterbury, Connecticut (1866 to 1869 and 1877 to 1883). In 1869, he was elected as a Republican to the Forty-first, Forty-second, and Forty-third Congresses, serving until 1875. An unsuccessful candidate for reelection, he resumed the practice of law until his death.
